2014 World Choir Games
Riga, Capital of Culture, shows interest
Riga, European Capital of Culture in 2014, shows a great interest in the World Choir Games (WCG). This is the impression after talks between INTERKULTUR representatives and Officials of the Latvian city of Riga had taken place in the last days. Furthermore it appeared that Riga has the best qualifications to be a World Choir Games host city.
Riga plays an important role as an international traffic junction in the Baltic Sea, an international airport and a good traffic and road network. „These are good conditions for the World Choir Games.“, says INTERKULTUR president Günter Titsch, „Additionally choir music clings to the cultural history of the country, that's great!“
In an interview with the local press Riga Mayor Andris Ameriks called the WCG an „homage“ to the country and its choir traditions. The local conductor Imants Kokars showed a great interest in hosting the event in his city.
Riga hosts many festivals in the area of music. The renowned „Latvian Song and Dance Festival“ is the oldest one and it is constantly encouraging a high number of fantastic choirs to participate. In 2014 the Latvian city will be "European Capital of Culture".
The World Choir Games is taking place every two years in different cities of the world. The next WCG will be held in the city of Cincinnati in the USA in 2012. Other candidate countries being interested in holding the famous choir event are South Africa and Indonesia.
