„Summer Star“ in winter
WCG choirs sing at the Christmas season
Memories of a summer competition in winter. In December the choir “The Australian Voices” brings the Australian sun to snow-cold Germany by performing the program “Summer Star”. The group presents Australian and German Christmas carols to a German audience.
The choir “The Australian Voices” is a winner of the World Choir Games (WCG) in Xiamen in 2006 and visits also the city of Bremen on the current tour. In 2004 Bremen was the host city of the 3rd World Choir Games (former Choir Olympics) and even then it created the right ambiance for choir music.
The Australians are certainly not the only choir presenting itself with a choric program at the Christmas season. Almost every choir from the former WCG participant ranks uses the time around Christmas to sing for itself and for others, including the Grazer Singakademie or the choir Pop Vox in Graz, which went on stage for various concerts. Graz was host city of the 2008 World Choir Games and will welcome choirs for the 1st World Choir Championships for Youth and Young Adults in Graz in 2011.
But Christmas exists outside of Europe, too – in India the “Shillong Chamber Choir” (WCG choir in 2010) is arranging a “festive Christmas” with their new CD “Christmas Everyday”.
The World Choir Games are held on different continents every two years. The 7th WCG will be in Cincinnati, USA, in 2012.
