Cincinnati 2012

Australia at the World Choir Games

Touring around the world

In July 2012 The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir is ambassador of its country Australia at the World Choir Games (WCG) in Cincinnati. From July 4 to 14, 2012 they are going on stage of the 7th WCG.

Following some travelling to Europe, China, and Korea in the past they’re now going to USA in July 2012. They will perform in front of the jury in The Champions Competition and get an evaluation of their performances once again.

It’s not for the first time that The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir participates, as in 2010 it performed at the 6th WCG in Shaoxing, China and won a Golden Diploma in the “Mixed Choirs”, “Musica Contemporanea” and “Folklore” categories. It’s their qualification for participation in The Champions Competition in July 2012!

The University of Newcastle Chamber Choir is well-known to both INTERKULTUR and the people in the choir’s home country and was founded in 1995. In addition to great success at national and international competitions it also became a famous media figure. In 2006 the choir achieved the title “Adult Choir of the Year” in a competition of the Australian channel ABC named “Choir of the Year”, in 2008 it won the television show “Battle of the choirs” produced by the national TV station Channel 7.

Their wish regarding Cincinnati: to better their position in the Musica Mundi World Rankings (WR). Currently they are ranked 21st among the top 1000. The Musica Mundi World Ranking is the only ranking list of this kind in the choral community. It includes the results from more than 20 years of INTERKULTUR choir competitions.

Since 2000 the World Choir Games have been taking place every two years on another continent. In 2012 it will be held on American soil for the first time ever. The Opening ceremony on July 4, 2012, the U.S. National Day, will always stay in mind.
