Long-lasting choral tradition to enrich the World Choir Games

SMU Chorale joins the category Mixed Choirs in its anniversary year

World Choir Games 2018

In 2018 SMU Chorale has two reasons to celebrate: Not only will they participate in the World Choir Games 2018 in their home country, but also party the choir 40th birthday! Formerly known as the Medunsa Choir and later renamed into SMU Chorale (Sefako Makgatho University), this South African ensemble was initiated in 1978/79 by Mr Richard Maboa.

The singers originated from various community choirs around Pretoria, staff members of the University and the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital. Today the choir, which consists of different generations, is under the direction of Mr Tshepo Matlala and participates in local choir competitions e.g. by the Gauteng Choral Music Association or Old Mutual.

As a member of the SATICA (South African Tertiary Institutional Choir Association) the SMU Chorale also became a founding member choir SATICA’s annual Eisteddfod in 1993. Besides taking part in competitions the singers enrich with their music many university activities such as graduations, open days, fund raising for charity around Pretoria and much more.

Its achievements include e.g. the current championship (standard category) at the Sedibeng Competition, current championship of the SATICA Platinum Section and the Tshwane Choral Music Competition, standard category champions of the 2016 Gauteng Choral Music Association Eisteddfod and double winner of the National Choral Music Achievement (NACMA) Awards for the best choir and best conductor.
