Girls Choir Canzone goes on a journey to Greece

Award-winning group from Estonia joins choir competition in Kalamata

Int. Choir Competition & Festival Kalamata

35 choirs have already registered to participate in the 2nd International Kalamata Choir Competition & Festival. One of them is the Girls Choir “Canzone”, an award-winning group of 50 young singers from Estonia, aged 12-20. Most of them are students at the Haapsalu Singing Studio Gaudeo Musicum.

Founded in 2001 by Ulrika Grauberg, who is still a conductor of the choir along with Eneken Viitma, Canzone has established in recent years as an integral part of the cultural scene in their home town Haapsalu.

Canzone’s repertoire is varied, ranging from medieval canons to modern arrangements of pop hits, but also includes works of Estonian composers, Estonian folk music settings, gospel music, spirituals, choral music with jazz motifs.

The choir cooperated with Haapsalu Music School Chamber Orchestra and performed together works by the Danish composer John Hoybye, whose music has become very dear to the hearts of the singers.

In summer 2007 a meeting and a workshop with the composer took place during a concert tour through Denmark. The choir’s performance inspired John Hoybye to write three Christmas songs, which were completed at Christmas 2008 and were dedicated to Canzone and its conductors.

The girls choir Canzone is also well-known at INTERKULTUR events. In 2012 they were invited to participate in the “Xinghai Prize International Choir Championships” in Guangzhou, China and in 2014 they were part of “Canta al mar – Festival Coral Internacional” in Calella, Spain and achieved high scores and several Golden Diplomas.

In Kalamata the young singers will compete in the Children’s Choirs category and once again in Folklore, where they will showcase the music of their home country to the Greek audience.

You can still join the 2nd Kalamata International Choir Competition & Festival with your choir! Send your registration by June 6 and be part of the event. For more information check out the official website and follow the event on Facebook.
