800 singers to perform in Princeton

Special guests: Composer Morten Lauridsen, The American Boychoir and Westminster Choir

Sing'n'Joy Princeton

From February 16-20, 2017 the world renowned Westminster Choir College in Princeton and INTERKULTUR will host 20 choirs from the United States and abroad to sing together in Friendship Concerts, compete in an international choir competition and celebrate the variety of international vocal music at the Sing’n’Joy Princeton Choir Festival.

They will be joined by composer and National Medal of the Arts recipient Morten Lauridsen, the American Boychoir and by the hosting choir of the Westminster Choir College.

Lauridsen, who is also Honorary Artistic President of organizer INTERKULTUR will act for the first time as adjudicator at an INTERKULTUR event and evaluate the choirs’ performances in the competition categories “A – Difficulty Level I with compulsory piece” and “C – Chamber Choirs and Vocal Ensembles”. As a special treat Lauridsen will make a precious gift to the winning choir: the first page of the manuscript of his famous composition “O Magnum Mysterium” – a truly memorable bonus from a truly great composer of our times.
He will further be the workshop leader at the seminar “The Relationship between Text and Music in the Choral Works of Morten Lauridsen” on February 19 at 11:30 am in the PHS Performing Arts Center.

Westminster Choir will present its Home Coming concert on February 18 at 8:00 pm at Princeton University as part of “Sing’n’Joy Princeton” 2017. Tickets for the concert evening under the motto “A Thousand Years to Live” can be ordered at tickets.princeton.edu, but seating is very limited. All concerts and the competitions are free and open to the public, seating as available.

The American Boychoir is one of the best-known choirs in the United States. It serves boys grade 1-4 from across the United States as well as other countries. On average the choir makes over 200 appearances in four to five major tours annually. At “Sing’n’Joy Princeton 2017” the American Boychoir will perform in a Friendship Concert together with groups from China, Indonesia and the United States in the Trinity Church at 8:00 pm on February 17.

Highlight of the Closing Concert on February 20, 2017 will be the Grand Prize Competition of the best choirs selected by the jury and the following announcement of competition results. Further the Sing’n’Joy Festival Choir will perform, consisting of participating choirs that rehearsed together during the time of the festival. They will sing two well-known pieces by Morten Lauridsen: “Dirait-on” and “Sure on this Shining Night”, conducted by the event’s Artistic Director, Romāns Vanags (Latvia).
