3rd Asia Pacific Choir Games

October 08 - 18, 2013 Manado, Indonesia

Manado 2013

The 1st Asian Choir Games, Jakarta 2007 were the largest international event for amateur choirs in Asia and the start of a new event series of INTERKULTUR on a continental basis. After the 2nd Asian Choir Games 2009 have been hosted in Gyeongnam Province of South Korea, the 3rd edition of the event was back to Indonesia in 2013! This time INTERKULTUR cooperated with the Provincial Government of North Sulawesi, kindly supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia.

The province with its capital of Manado City, the cities of Tomohon, Bitung and others is holding one of the strongest choral communities all over the globe with thousands of mostly church based choirs. North Sulawesi, one of 33 Indonesian provinces, is the one with the highest Christian population in the world’s largest Muslim country; therefore it has a unique concentration of choirs which might be only comparable with the Baltic Republics in Europe. So North Sulawesi was the perfect place to host Asia’s largest choir competition in 2013.

"I think singing is the most beautiful way of travelling to the heart. Our goal should not be to lose ourselves in a potential world."

Prof. Erwin Ortner, Honorary President, Austria

"Dear friends, in these days you will celebrate one of the most beautiful human abilities, and that is singing."

Prof. Petr Eben, Honorary President, Czech Republic

"At the end of the announcement you can read the weighty sentence: “Music is the language shared by the world.” According to Hermann Hesse there is “nothing more desirable” in life “than the sensation of music, the sensation of swinging along, of the rhythmic life and of the harmonic right to exist. We have to remain at that place where we find something that resembles music.” This harmonic right of existence is nowhere felt stronger and more binding as in choirs all over the world: in children’s choirs, mixed youth choirs and mixed choirs as well as in female and male choirs. These communities stick together, aim at each other and strive for utmost musical laurels in many different ways to make themselves and other people happy not only but also because they feel to be indescribably rich because “you own something that goes beyond the material substance” (Ingeborg Bachmann)."

Prof. Gert Frischmuth, Honorary President, Germany
