Karl-Franzens-Universität

Aula - Competition Location

For more than 400 years, the Karl-Franzens-Universität has had an important influence on the lively character and image of the Styrian capital. Many famous academics worked and made revolutionary discoveries here. The Neo-Renaissance-style group of buildings in the center of the campus reminds us of a history rich in tradition. Additionally, it is not far away from the old town center, which is a classified historical monument. Adjacent to these historical buildings you find exciting new constructions, symbols of dynamism and growth, created by renowned architects from Graz. The Karl-Franzens-Universität is moving forward, just like its students and teachers. A campus in progress.

No matter if you go by bike – the students’ preferred means of transport on campus – or by foot, you can easily get from one department to another, as well as to the academic offices and to the students’ representative organizations. In immediate vicinity to the campus there is also a spacious area containing the Sports Center’s facilities. The Center offers an amazing array of sports to all members of the university. The pleasant atmosphere in this area created by green oases, little pubs and garden cafés also provides plenty of opportunities to relax.

There are nearly 20,000 students. Some of these are young people studying towards their first university degree; others are working graduates with the wish to acquire additional qualifications, whilst others are senior students following the dream of lifelong education.

The main principles at the university are interdisciplinary and internationality. Forming part of a world-wide network of co-operations, the Karl-Franzens-Universität and other closely related institutions such as the Afro-Asian Institute or the students’ representative organizations are experienced hosts and have always supported the mobility of both teachers and students.

The university district sets the scene for scientific symposia and discussions about socio-political issues. Many different artists not only find inspiration here, but also the facilities for their own exhibitions. Being part of the university community, however, also includes celebrations and balls, such as the Multicultural Ball displaying fascinating diversity, the students’ parties or the famous summer party – Europe’s biggest event of its kind – at the University Sports Center, where the participants of the annual "Kleeblattlauf" (a giant relay race) celebrate their victory.
