INTERKULTUR: A "Global Player" in Choral Music

The organization of INTERKULTUR is born by the idea of bringing together people of all countries, cultures and world views in peaceful competitions.

Right from the beginning Günter Titsch was convinced of the power of his idea to create "bridges of encounters". All people involved share the same enthusiasm for choral music. It resolves prejudices, opens eyes and hearts for friendships and lays the groundwork for a vibrant and peaceful togetherness that outreaches music. Within a short period of time, this philosophy has made INTERKULTUR an international top address for major musical events in the choral community. Today INTERKULTUR organizes every year up to 14 international choir competitions and festivals around the globe.

Among its members the organization counts leading personalities from culture, politics and business, as well as choirs and orchestras, clubs and cultural organizations: the "World Choir Council", a kind of United Nations of choral singing, is made up of renowned choral experts from 96 countries. They represent INTERKULTUR's musical network with app. 120,000 choirs with 4.8 million singers. The organization has offices and representatives in numerous countries and is supported by ministries of culture, municipal authorities and countless organizations.

Everybody can be part of it

INTERKULTUR’s activities are not restricted to the organization of the World Choir Games, regional competitions and festivals, but also include the realization of continental events such as the European and Asian Choir Games. The philosophy of INTERKULTUR events implies that not only top class choirs are being admitted to the events but also all choirs from the base of the choral community. And all of them experience during these activities a new and diversified world of choral singing: Cheerful and uplifting, full of the unique joys of singing together in a team. Friendship concerts, competitions and festivals boost mutual respect and understanding between cultures, therefore giving a new quality to our common future in a world that is growing smaller.

During the last years the idea of competing has been expanded by several pedagogical offers which are now part of almost all INTERKULTUR events.

"I would like to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to each and every one of you at Interkultur. Each of you in your own little way, helped us enjoy the experience which is the World Choir Games, and it has left an indelible impression on [...] every one of us. We loved the experiences we gained, the performances, the venues and the thrill of competition, and are taking away valuable memories of the entire games. [...] Thanks for helping us and guiding us on the pre-competition formalities and the travel plans. Once again, to all of you , thank you for your support, thanks for the hospitality and thanks for the opportunity. We definitely will be back in 2012!"

Michael Sathasivam, Voice.Print, Sri Lanka (WCG Shaoxing 2010)

"From a personal point of view I was delighted to be involved. There was a lot of adjudication to be done, but everything was so well organised that it was very easy to concentrate on the job in hand. I only hope all the choirs were happy with our efforts!"

Jonathan Rathbone, jury member, Great Britain (Venezia in Musica 2012)

"We are very grateful to you and the whole INTERKULTUR organization for understanding all our problems and being so helpful and understanding from the very beginning. We had a great time in Austria. The organization of events was flawless so we were able to focus on our singing alone and to sing stress free. We also had the chance to meet some amazing people and listen to many fantastic singers. For our young and inexperienced singers these choir games were a chance to listen and learn and improve themselves in every respect and the Games were also a great test for our conductor. For all of us, it was an experience of a lifetime. The fact that we won Silver X in our category made our stay even better. Thank you again for your cooperation and straightforwardness."

Crkveni hor "Sveti Jovan Krstitelj", Serbia (ECG Graz 2013)

"We had a wonderful time. I was very impressed with the organization and outcome of the whole event. You were always there when I had questions and needed answers. I can't tell you how much of my stress was relieved because of your quick responses to my many questions. The guides we had were wonderful and filled with such energy. We were truly blessed."

Lynne King, Midland Center for the Arts Center Stage Choirs, USA (WCG Riga 2014)

"On behalf of the crew and passengers of Theaterkoor Vinger in je Oor I would like to thank you for organising such a FANTASTIC festival! We have had a great time and have some of the best memories of our lives in our minds forever. Everything was organized in a perfect way, so big, big, big compliments to you all! […] We will meet again in the future, because this will not be the last time we joined an INTERKULTUR festival!"

Wim van der Zanden, Theaterkoor Vinger in je Oor, Netherlands (Calella 2014)

"And a very big thank you for all that you did to make CANTA AL MAR such a thoroughly enjoyable experience, not only for the hundreds of participants, but also for the adjudicators. It was really a pleasure for me, not only to hear so much excellent choral singing, but also to enjoy being involved with the Interkultur “family”. The work you are all doing to promote our beloved art and to support such positive cultural exchange between nations is a rare gift to the world and I was delighted to be a part of it."

Rosalind Hall, jury member, USA (Calella 2015)

The singers' success – a benefit for everyone

INTERKULTUR pursues highest standards, aiming for constant development and improvement in the interests of its participants and partner cities and organizations as INTERKULTUR is also responsible for the success of its local partners: During the World Choir Games in Cincinnati the local Convention & Visitors Bureau noted an economic impact of $ 73.5 million. The event also brought considerable image benefits in terms of international media coverage and attention with a publicity value of $ 30 million.

While INTERKULTUR, with its events in Germany, Austria, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Malta, Spain, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Hungary, Malaysia, Vietnam, China and the U.S., has become a prominent player regarding international cultural exchanges, its founder is pressing ahead with his next vision: INTERKULTUR president Günter Titsch aims to connect his competition with the Olympic Games by having both events held in the same place. After all, both ideas are inspired by the same principles: peaceful competition for the laurels of victory in a spirit of mutual respect, regardless of color or ideology. Uniting the world's sporting and musical youth would be meaningful and conceivable – an ideal that is within our reach.
